TUESDAY WEATHER: Seven warnings issued for severe weather including disruptive snow and rain

Very cold and wet conditions with light snowfall expected to set in from Tuesday evening in places over Eastern Cape, southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, southern Free State as well as along the Lesotho borders with the passage of the cut-off low weather system, clearing from the west by Thursday according to the SA Weather Service.

A steep upper trough, becoming a cut-off low will pass over the Eastern Cape causing showers and thundershowers across the province and an accompanying ridging high will result in heavy downpours in places over the province with 30mm to 70mm of rain expected and snowfalls of 10cm to 20cm.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service:

Note that there are two maps indicating the warnings above.

A. level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall resulting in flooding of bridges/roads/settlements and damage to property/infrastructure is expected in places along the coast and adjacent interior between East London and Port Edward.

B. level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall resulting in flooding of bridges/roads/settlements and damage to property/infrastructure is expected in places long the coast and adjacent interior of KwaZulu-Natal, south of St. Lucia.

C. level 2 warning for disruptive rainfall resulting in flooding of bridges/roads/settlements and damage to property/infrastructure is expected over the south-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape and the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, except in the extreme north-east.

D. level 1 warning for damaging coastal wind and waves leading to difficulty in navigation at sea for small vessels/ personal water craft and localised disruption to beachfront activities between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas.

E. level 5 warning for disruptive snowfall with moderate to heavy snowfall over Senqu, Elundini, and Matatiele local municipialities resulting in traffic disruptions, disruption to essential services and some communities temporarily cut-off. Snowfall accumulations are expected to be 10cm to 20cm, resulting in prolonged impacts.

F. level 2 warning for disruptive snowfall resulting in traffic disruptions, disruption to essential services and some communities temporarily cut-off is expected in places over the north-eastern high-ground of the Eastern Cape.

G. level 2 warning for disruptive snowfall over the south-western part of KwaZulu-Natal, as per the map.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Morning fog along the coast, otherwise fine cool to cold but partly cloudy in the south-east with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the extreme south-east where it will be cloudy. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Fine and warm over the extreme western parts, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to cold with isolated showers and rain. It will be cloudy in the east. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong easterly to south-easterly, reaching near gale force along the south-west coast.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Very cold in places over the interior, otherwise cloudy and cold with widespread showers and rain, but scattered in the north-west. Light snow is expected in places in the north-eastern high ground. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly, becoming north-easterly west of Gqeberha.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and cold with widespread showers and thundershowers, but general showers and rain along the coast and adjacent interior. It will be very cold with snow in the northern high ground. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Cloudy and cool to cold, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the south. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly, becoming fresh to strong south-easterly south of Richard's Bay in the afternoon.
