Very cold and windy with three warnings including disruptive snowfall on Friday

The intense cold front that made landfall on Wednesday and deposited snow on the peaks is expected to continue to affect the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Free State provinces until Friday.

The public and small stock farmers are advised that very cold and windy conditions are expected over the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape, the southern part of the Northern Cape and in places in the Free State.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Friday:

A. level 2 warning for damaging waves resulting in the damage to coastal infrastructure and disruption to beach front activities along the coast between Plettenberg Bay and Cape Vidal.

B. level 2 warning for damaging coastal winds resulting in localised disruption of small harbours and/or a port for a short period, small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing a locality and difficulty in navigation between Plettenberg Bay and Kosi Bay.

C. level 1 warning for disruptive snow resulting in traffic disruption due to icy roads, isolated loss of vulnerable livestock and crops over Senqu and Elundini local Municipalities in the morning.

Regional forecasts from the SA Weather Service for Friday:

1. GAUTENG
Fine and cold.
The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate

2. MPUMALANGA
Fine and cold to cool, becoming partly cloudy in the Lowveld.

3. LIMPOPO
Fine and cold to cool, becoming partly cloudy south of the Lowveld.

4. NORTH-WEST
Fine and cold to very cold.

5. FREE STATE
Partly cloudy with morning fog in the west, otherwise fine and cold to very cold.

6. NORTHERN CAPE
Morning fog over the central and the western parts, otherwise cloudy to partly cloudy and cold to very cold, but fine the north-east. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to south-westerly, becoming moderate north-westerly from the afternoon.

7. WESTERN CAPE
Morning fog in places in the west, otherwise cloudy and cold, but very cold in the northern interior and partly cloudy along the south coast and adjacent. Light rain is expected in the south-western parts. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to south-westerly, but fresh to strong along the south coast. It will become fresh to strong north-westerly along the south-west coast from the afternoon.

8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Light snowfall in the north at first, otherwise, partly cloudy and cold to very cold, but cool in places along the coast. The wind along the coast will be Fresh to strong westerly, but near gale in places.

9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Light snowfall in the north at first, otherwise fine and cold to very cold, but cool in places along the coast. The wind along the coast will be Fresh to strong south-westerly.

10. KWAZULU-NATAL
Isolated morning showers and rain in the east and along the coast, otherwise fine cold, but cool along the coast and adjacent interior, but partly cloudy in the north-west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly, becoming light westerly to north-westerly in the south from the evening.
