Snowfall is possible for the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and the Free State as well as Lesotho and Namibia between Wednesday and Saturday this week. Snow is NO LONGER indicated for the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban, and also not for Mpumalanga or Gauteng. At this stage the snowfall is indicated to be anything from very light to heavier on some peaks (in the Western Cape). The intense cold front that is responsible these conditions is also expected to deliver heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough seas according to the SA Weather Service. In the Western Cape the snow is looking like it will be fairly low-level, so Matroosberg Reserve and the Koue Bokkeveld may get some ground level snow (around 5cm), but it is currently looking like it might be quite heavy on the peaks (15-25cm). Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve outside Franschhoek looks like it may get some decent coverage. All of the peaks around Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Worcester, Robertson, Montagu, Ceres, De Doorns, the Koue Bokkeveld and the Cederberg are on the radar for snowfall. Greyton, McGregor, Swellendam, the Swartberg range around Ladismith, Calitzdorp, between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert, De Rust and the high ground around Uniondale are indicated for a light dusting of snow. The Swartberg Pass might get a light dusting of snow on Thursday. In the Northern Cape the high-ground around Sutherland, Calvinia, Loxton, Carnavon, Kuruman, Postmasburg, Richmond, and Noupoort are some of the places that might get some snowfall. In the Eastern Cape the high ground around Graaff-Reinet, Nieu-Bethesda, Middelburg, and the area between Molteno and Barkly East may get some light snowfall and the higher elevations around Rhodes might get around 10cm. The SA Weather Service has issued a level 1 warning for disruptive snow resulting in traffic disruptions due to icy roads, and isolated cases of loss of vulnerable livestock and crops over Senqu and Elundini local municipalities in the Eastern Cape on Thursday. ALSO READ: Disruptive rainfall, damaging wind and wave warnings as intense cold front arrives from Wednesday. Very light snowfall is currently indicated in the Free State around Trompsburg, Zastron, Fouriesburg, Clarens, Bethlehem, and parts of the Free State marked on the map but the probability is not particularly high. There is a chance of some snow at high elevations in KwaZulu-Natal, as per the map. Light snow might fall higher up on Sani Pass and on the peaks around Swartberg and Underberg. Most of the high ground in Lesotho is indicated for possible light snowfall. With the possiblity of snowfall at higher elevations in Lesotho and the Drakensberg, hikers planning trips in this region should continue to watch our forecasts. The snow currently indicated in the data will be low enough to settle on the high-ground and mountain passes in some of the areas marked on the map but only light snow is indicated. Snowfall or flurries are still indicated for Thursday for the high-ground north of Rosh Pinah, north of Aus and some of the mountains in Namibia and this has been quite consistent for the last few days. If you are planning to travel through areas that may get snow it is worth being prepared by reading our article on safe winter travel. Driving may be slightly challenging for a short time in some areas (mainly in Lesotho), but the snowfall is not expected to be particularly significant at this stage. The map indicates where we are seeing the possibility of snow, but it may not fall in all of the areas shown on the map. As with any forecast of any kind (temperature, clouds, rain, wind), what eventually happens may or may not be similar to the forecast. Snow indicated may reduce or vanish completely in some areas, or the dates and times may change. Follow our channels
