More widespread and possibly low-level snow likely this week12 July 2023 [updated 18 July]By Staff Writer
More low-level snowfall is possible across parts of South Africa and Lesotho from late on Tuesday evening this week and into Friday. Anything from light to slightly heavier snowfall is currently indicated in the data for Lesotho as well as six South African provinces. Johannesburg and parts of Gauteng are NO LONGER the radar for possible snow but light snowfall or flurries may be possible for Mpumalanga, focused around Secunda, Ermelo and Dullstroom. The heavier snowfall, which is currently indicated for Lesotho and parts of the Free State, is part of what is still a slightly advanced forecast for later in the week so this may still change. The snow indicated for the Western Cape is extremely light, but still fairly low-level and MAY be accessible by ordinary vehicle at this stage. As you move more east though the freezing level drops and on Wednesday snow is currently indicated on the Swartberg Pass near Oudtshoorn and in the Langkloof high-ground. The snow currently indicated for the Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, the Free State and Lesotho on Thursday and Friday is likely to be fairly low but is not currently indicated to be very heavy. It may however still impact travel in some areas. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for disruptive snow over the mountains of Eastern Cape, valid for 19 to 20 July. SAWS warns that the accumulation of snowfall is expected to particularly affect the Dr Beyers Naude local municipality. SAWS says Graaff Reinet is expected to be significantly affected as well as the Chris Hani district municipality. Barkly Pass will be affected from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning. Other areas that will likely be affected are the Raymond Mhlaba, Elundini and Matatiele local municipalities. The map indicates where SnowReportSA is seeing the possibility of snow, but it may not fall in all of the areas shown on the map. As with any forecast of any kind (temperature, clouds, rain, wind), what eventually happens may or may not be similar to the forecast.
