FRIDAY WEATHER: Very hot except on the coast and a warning for six provinces

From Friday it should be partly cloudy in the east with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the extreme north-eastern parts on Saturday.

Hot and humid weather resulting in extremely uncomfortable conditions is expected over the extreme north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as in places over Sarah Baartman, Amathole, Chris Hani, OR. Tambo and Alfred Nzo District Municipalities in the Eastern Cape.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Friday:

A. level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail, resulting in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements, over the eastern parts of both the Free State and North West, all of Gauteng, the Highveld and escarpment areas of Mpumalanga (except for the extreme north), the western and central parts of KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Limpopo as per the updated map above.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over parts of the Northern Cape, the south-western parts of the North West, western and central parts of the Free State, as well as the western and extreme northern parts of the Eastern Cape.

GAUTENG
Partly cloudy and warm with scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers.

MPUMALANGA
Partly cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the Lowveld.

LIMPOPO
Partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the south-west and extreme north-east.

NORTH-WEST
Fine and hot, becoming partly cloudy, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers in the east and extreme north, but scattered in the extreme east.

THE FREE STATE
Fine and hot, becoming partly cloudy, with isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers in the east. It will become windy in the south by evening.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Fine and hot but very hot in the central and eastern parts, becoming partly cloudy in the east from afternoon. The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly to south-easterly, becoming fresh south-westerly from the afternoon.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy over the southern parts with morning light rain in the south-east, otherwise fine and warm to hot but very hot in the north-west. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-westerly along the south coast in the morning, otherwise moderate southerly to south-easterly, reaching fresh to strong along the west coast in the afternoon.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy and warm, becoming cloudy in the south by the evening. The wind along the coast will be moderate south-westerly, becoming south-easterly in the afternoon, but easterly in the evening.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy south of the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated afternoon thundershowers in the north-east. Isolated showers and rain are expected south of the escarpment in the evening. The wind along the coast will be moderate south-westerly, becoming south-easterly in the afternoon.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning fog in places over extreme northern and south-western interior, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the north-east. It will become cloudy in the evening. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly in the north, otherwise moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly, spreading to Kosi Bay by the evening.
