Heavy rainfall, disruptive snowfall and damaging wind & waves on Friday – warnings issued

A series of cold fronts are expected to bring scattered to widespread showers and rain over the western parts of the Western Cape from Thursday until Sunday.

The most significant cold front will reach the south-western Cape by Friday afternoon, where quick and heavy downpours are possible, with another cold front expected on Sunday.

Rainfall accumulations of 30-60mm are likely over the south-western parts over the four days, reaching 70-90mm over the mountainous region with most of the rainfall expected from Friday into Saturday, according to the SA Weather Service.

Continuous rainfall together with saturated soils will lead to significant impacts.

ALSO READ: Cold fronts and cut-off low bringing more snow including Joburg and seven SA provinces.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Friday:

A. level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of roads and danger to life due to fast flowing streams over low-lying bridges is expected over the western parts of the Western Cape.

B. level 2 warning for damaging winds leading to difficulty in navigating at sea and localised disruptions to small ports and coastal towns are expected between Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas as well as along the coast between Plettenberg Bay and East London.

C. level 2 warning for damaging waves leading to damages to coastal infrastructure and disruption to beachfront activities are expected along the coast between Plettenberg Bay and East London.

D. level 1 warning for disruptive snowfall leading to loss of livestock, passes closed and traffic disruptions due to snow and icy roads is expected in places over the north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Ba-Phalaborwa local municipality in Limpopo.

Regional forecasts from the SA Weather Service for Friday:

1. GAUTENG
Partly cloudy and cool to cold with morning isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the south.
The expected UVB sunburn index: High

2. MPUMALANGA
Fine and cool to warm in the Lowveld, otherwise partly cloudy and cold with isolated to scattered showers and rain in the morning becoming fine towards sunset.

3. LIMPOPO
Partly cloudy and cool with with isolated showers and rain in the extreme south becoming fine by the afternoon. It will be warm on the Lowveld and the Limpopo Valley.

4. NORTH-WEST
Party cloudy and cold with isolated morning showers and thundershowers in the east becoming fine from the west.

5. FREE STATE
Partly cloudy, and cold with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, except in the north-west, clearing from the west.

6. NORTHERN CAPE
Partly cloudy in the extreme south-west and south, fine and cold to very cold. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-westerly in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh westerly to south-westerly.

7. WESTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy, windy and cool to cold with isolated showers and rain in the evening but cloudy with scattered to widespread showers and rain in the south-west. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north-westerly reaching gale force along the south-west coast.

8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy and cool with isolated showers and rain in places. The wind along the coast will be Moderate to fresh westerly to south-westerly.

9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy and cool to cold, but very cold in the north. Isolated morning showers and rain are expected in the extreme north-east, with snowfall on the mountains peaks. The wind along the coast will be Moderate to fresh westerly to south-westerly.

10. KWAZULU-NATAL
Warm in the north-east, otherwise partly cloudy and cool with isolated showers and rain. It will become fine by the evening. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly in the north at first, otherwise southerly to south-westerly.
