Eight weather warnings for Monday including disruptive snow and rain29 September 2024 [updated 30 September]By Staff Writer

An intense cold front is expected to affect the Western Cape and southern parts of the Northern Cape from Saturday night until Monday, spreading to the interior of the Eastern Cape by Monday. The closure of the following mountain passes are likely on Monday, according to the SA Weather Service: Swartberg, Franschhoek, Hex River, Ouberg and Katbakkies. Snowfall accumulation of between 5-10 cm is expected, with possible low-level or ground snowfall especially over southern high ground of the Northern Cape and the Cape Winelands and Central Karoo municipalities. Warnings from the SA Weather Service (SAWS): A. Orange level 5 warning for disruptive snowfall leading to some communities temporarily inaccessible as well as closure of mountain passes, is expected over the Witzenberg and Breede Valley municipalities of the Western Cape. B. Orange level 5 warning for damaging winds and waves resulting to a risk of medium to large vessels dragging anchors and breaking mooring lines, are expected between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay. C. Yellow level 4 warning for damaging winds and waves leading to difficulty in navigation at sea are expected between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas. D. Yellow level 4 warning for damaging winds and waves resulting in medium vessels at risk of capsizing or taking on water, dragging anchors or breaking mooring lines and damage to cargo impacting the marine section are expected between Plettenberg Bay and Kei Mouth. E. Yellow level 4 warning for disruptive snowfall leading to loss of livestock and crops as well as closure of mountain passes is expected over the over the southern high ground of Namakwa District of the Northern Cape, the Cape Winelands, Little and Central Karoo of the Western Cape and the Ubuntu Local Municipality of the Northern Cape. F. Yellow level 1 warning for disruptive rainfall resulting in localised flooding of susceptible formal/informal settlements or roads, low-lying areas and bridges, major roads affected but can be used, increased travel times, difficult driving conditions on dirt roads, as well as minor motor vehicle accidents due to slippery roads and/reduced visibility is expected in places in the south-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal. G. Yellow level 1 warning for disruptive snowfall resulting in isolated loss of vulnerable livestock and crops as well as traffic disruptions is expected over the high-lying interior of Eastern Cape. H. Yellow level 1 warning for damaging winds resulting in localised damage to settlements and difficult in driving conditions are expected over Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Sundays River Valley, Kouga and Ndlambe Local Municipalities. Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in places in the North West Province. Regional forecasts from SAWS for Monday: 1. GAUTENG Fine, windy and cool, but warm in the north. The expected UVB sunburn index: High 2. MPUMALANGA Partly cloudy in the Highveld, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers. 3. LIMPOPO Partly cloudy in the Western Bushveld, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers except in southern parts of the Western Bushveld. 4. NORTH-WEST PROVINCE Fine, windy and cool to warm. 5. FREE STATE Cloudy with morning fog patched over the extreme east, otherwise fine, windy and cool to warm. 6. NORTHERN CAPE Cloudy over the central part, otherwise partly cloudy, windy and cold to cool, but fine in the north, with isolated showers and thundershowers and light snowfall over the extreme south. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly reaching strong at times north of Port Nolloth. 7. WESTERN CAPE Cloudy and cold to very cold with isolated showers, but scattered to widespread along the south-west coast, spreading to the south coast by afternoon and clearing in the evening. It will be windy over the eastern interior. Disruptive snowfalls can be expected over the high ground. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-westerly reaching gale force along the south coast but strong gale east of Stilbaai from late morning, otherwise moderate to fresh southerly to fresh. The expected UVB sunburn index: High 8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE Cloudy and windy with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the south. Snow is expected over the high lying areas from the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong westerly, reaching gale force from mid-morning. 9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE Fine in the west in the morning, otherwise cloudy and cold to cool with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the extreme east. It will be very cold with snow over the high lying areas from the evening. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-westerly, reaching gale force in places in the south from the afternoon. 10. KWAZULU-NATAL Cloudy and cool to cold but very cold in places in the south-west. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected in the north-west, otherwise scattered but widespread in the south-east. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south-easterly north of Durban but fresh in the north in the morning, otherwise light to moderate south-westerly.
