SATURDAY WEATHER: Warnings for severe thunderstorms and disruptive rain – widespread in places

From Saturday it should be partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered to widespread in places.

Severe thunderstorms leading to excessive lightning, large amounts of small hail, gusty winds (40-60 km/h) and heavy downpours can be expected over Khai-Ma, the eastern parts of Hantam and the eastern parts of Karoo Hoogland municipalities in the Northern Cape, and the Beaufort municipality in the Western Cape.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service:

A. level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, and hail and excessive lightning, and gusty strong winds leading to localised flooding of settlements, roads and bridges over the eastern parts of the central and eastern parts of the Northern Cape, as well as the Beaufort West Municipality of the Western Cape.

A. level 2 warning for disruptive rain with heavy downpours leading to localised flooding of settlements, roads and bridges in places over as well as the western parts of the Eastern Cape persisting into Sunday.

Morning fog patches over the southern parts, otherwise fine and cool but warm over the Lowveld.

THE FREE STATE
Partly cloudy and cool, becoming cloudy in the afternoon with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers except in the east.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Partly cloudy to cloudy, windy and cool to warm, with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread over the southeastern parts. The wind along the coast will be strong south-easterly.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy in the extreme west where it will be cool to warm, otherwise cloudy and cold with isolated showers but scattered along the eastern parts of the south coast and eastern interior. The wind along the coast will be light southerly to south-westerly along the south coast in the morning, otherwise moderate south-easterly but fresh to strong along the west and south-west coast.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and cool to cold with widespread showers and rain, but showers and thundershowers in the north. The wind along the coast will be Light to moderate south-westerly, becoming moderate southerly in the afternoon.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Fine to partly cloudy and cool, becoming cloudy from the west with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be Light and variable in the north at first, otherwise light to moderate south-easterly, but light south-westerly in the west becoming moderate to fresh southerly in the afternoon spreading east.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning fog over the interior, otherwise fine and warm, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon with isolated showers and thundershowers except in the north-west. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-easterly north of Cape St. Lucia, otherwise moderate to fresh easterly to north-easterly.
