An intense cut off low is expected to affect the Eastern Cape from Wednesday to Friday, and according to the SA Weather Service a combination of snow, heavy rain, flooding, very cold conditions and very rough seas can be expected.

A cut-off low is also expected to affect the eastern parts of the Western Cape on Wednesday and Thursday. Two-day rainfall accumulations of 40-60mm can be expected over the Theewaterskloof and the Langeberg municipalities of the Western Cape, while 150-200mm is possible over the eastern Garden Route district, with higher accumulations in the mountainous regions.

Given the current vulnerability of these regions following the severe weather system in May, as well as the near full or overflowing dams, significant impacts are possible.

The Western Cape Education Department has announced the closure of all schools in the Eden and Central Karoo District on Wednesday and Thursday. All schools in the other seven education districts will remain open.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service:

A. level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of roads and bridges, danger to life due to fast moving streams and rivers, and causing major roads to be closed is expected over the eastern parts of the Garden Route District Municipality in the Western Cape as well as Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Koukamma, Kouga, and Sundays River Valley Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape until Thursday.

B. level 5 warning for disruptive rainfall leading to danger to life, flooding and displacements of settlements as well as mudslides is expected over Buffalo City Metro, Makana, Ndlambe, Ngqushwa, Raymond Mhlaba Amahlathi, and Great Kei Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape until Thursday.

C. level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of settlements, roads and bridges as well as susceptible areas is expected in places over the Swellendam Local Municipality, as well as the eastern parts of the Central Karoo and the western parts of the Garden Route District Municipalities in the Western Cape until Thursday.

D. level 2 warning for disruptive rainfall leading to localised flooding of roads and susceptible areas is expected over the extreme south-eastern parts of the Northern Cape province, Theewaterskloof and the Langeberg Local Municipalities in the Western Cape as well as the Dr Beyers Naude, Blue Crane Route Enoch Mgijima, Intsika Yethu, Great Kei and Mnquma Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape until Thursday.

E. level 4 warning for damaging wind and waves leading to difficulty in navigation at sea as well as small vessels taking on water is expected between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay until Thursday. South-easterly swells with wave heights of 4-6m are expected coupled with strong winds of 50 to 60 km/h.

F. level 2 warning for damaging waves leading to small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing as well as difficulty in navigation is expected between Plettenberg Bay and East London until Thursday.

G. level 2 warning for disruptive snow leading to icy roads resulting in traffic disruptions is expected over the northern high-lying areas in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.
