Heat wave with thunderstorms continues through week2 December 2024 [updated 3 December]By Staff Writer

A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected over Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the central and eastern parts of the North West, the northern parts of the Free State and the northern and north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal until at least Friday. Extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions can be expected in the Lowveld of both Limpopo and Mpumalanga and the Western Bushveld and Valley of Limpopo from Tuesday until Saturday, including the extreme northern parts of Gauteng on Wednesday. Warnings from the SA Weather Service (SAWS) for Tuesday: A. yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga on Tuesday and Wednesday, as per the map below. Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Free State, North West, north eastern parts of the Northern Cape, Gauteng, Western Bushveld and Lowveld of Limpopo and the Highveld of Mpumalanga. Regional forecasts from SAWS for Tuesday: 1. GAUTENG Fine and hot, becoming partly cloudy from the afternoon. It will be very hot in the north. The expected UVB sunburn index: Very High 2. MPUMALANGA Partly cloudy along the escarpment in the morning, otherwise fine and warm to hot but very hot to extremely hot in the Lowveld. It will become partly cloudy on the Highveld in the afternoon. 3. LIMPOPO Fine and hot to very hot but extremely hot in places in the Lowveld, Limpopo Valley and the Western Bushveld. It will become partly cloudy over the south-western parts in the afternoon. 4. NORTH WEST Fine and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy in the east by the afternoon. 5. FREE STATE Cloudy in the extreme east at first, otherwise fine and warm to hot, becoming partly cloudy in the eastern by the afternoon. 6. NORTHERN CAPE Cool along the coast, otherwise fine and hot to very hot, but warm in the south where it will become partly cloudy in the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong southerly. 7. WESTERN CAPE Partly cloudy and warm, but cloudy and cool in places along the coast, clearing from the west from the afternoon. Light rain is expected over the western parts in the morning and east of Mossel Bay from the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be light north-westerly along the south-west coast in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh west to south-westerly. The expected UVB sunburn index: Very High 8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE Partly cloudy and warm, becoming cloudy with isolated showers along the coast from late afternoon. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to south- westerly. 9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE Morning fog in places in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm, but hot over the interior, with isolated thunderstorms in the north east. It will become cloudy with isolated showers along the coast and adjacent interior from evening. The wind along the coast will be light north-easterly, becoming moderate south-westerly from afternoon. 10. KWAZULU-NATAL Partly cloudy to cloudy and warm but hot in the north with isolated showers and thundershowers except in the extreme north. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly to north- easterly, becoming south-westerly in the south in the late afternoon.
