SATURDAY WEATHER: Cut-off low – widespread rainfall in four provinces and a warning for severe thunderstorms in five

A cut-off low pressure system is expected to affect the western parts of the country this weekend. Severe thunderstorms can be expected over the southern high grounds of Namakwa (Northern Cape) and the Central Karoo (Western Cape) districts on Friday and Saturday afternoon, and over the western parts of Namakwa (Northern Cape) and the west coast districts on Friday evening, spreading across the Namakwa (Northern Cape) and the Central Karoo (Western Cape) districts on Saturday.

From Sunday partly cloudy and cool conditions can be expected with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms possible over the central and eastern parts of the country from the afternoon. It will be warm in places over the northern parts of the country.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service:

A. level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning resulting in localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, and localised damage to settlements and infrastructure over the Northern Cape, northern parts of Western Cape, western parts of Free State, extreme western parts of North West, as well as the extreme southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal in the evening.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the western parts of the North West and the extreme north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape.

GAUTENG
Partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south-west.

MPUMALANGA
Cloudy with fog patches along the escarpment in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and warm but hot over the Lowveld. Isolated showers and thundershowers can be excepted along the escarpment in the afternoon.

LIMPOPO
Cloudy in the east at first, with morning fog patches in the central parts otherwise fine and warm to hot.

NORTH-WEST
Partly cloudy, windy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the west.

THE FREE STATE
Partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers over the east to the central parts but widespread in the south.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Cloudy, windy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread in the west and south. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-easterly in the south at first and in the evening, otherwise fresh to strong north-westerly.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Cloudy and warm, but cool in places with widespread showers and thundershowers over the West Coast and the Central Karoo, otherwise scattered. The wind along the coast will be fresh south-easterly in the west becoming moderate westerly by afternoon, otherwise moderate south-westerly.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy, windy, and cool with widespread showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly, reaching strong in places.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy in places, otherwise cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the west where it will be cool and windy. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers in the extreme south, otherwise isolated except in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south-westerly in the south in the morning and evening, otherwise moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly.
