THURSDAY WEATHER: Cold and wet in parts of the country and a warning for severe thunderstorms

Severe thunderstorms accompanied by large amounts of small hail, strong gusty winds (60 km/h, gusting up to 70 km/h), and heavy downpours (20-30 mm) are possible over the southern parts of Namakwa (Northern Cape), the Central Karoo, and the Garden Route (excluding the Hessequa Municipality) from early Thursday morning until the evening and lightning associated with these thunderstorms may be excessive at times.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service:

A level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms leading to large amounts of small hail, strong gusty winds and heavy downpours are possible over the southern parts of the Northern Cape and eastern parts of the Western Cape.

GAUTENG
Partly cloudy and cool.

MPUMALANGA
Morning fog patches in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to cold. It will be warm in places in the Lowveld where isolated showers and rain are expected.

LIMPOPO
Partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and rain in places in the north, as well as in the east. A chance of drizzle is expected along the escarpment.

NORTH-WEST
Morning fog patches in the east, otherwise fine to partly cloudy and cool.

THE FREE STATE
Morning fog patches in the east, otherwise fine to partly cloudy and cool but cold along the Lesotho boarder. Isolated morning showers and thundershowers are expected in the extreme south-west.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Partly cloudy to cloudy and cool but warm in the north with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the south. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly to south-easterly reaching strong at times between Table Bay and Plettenberg Bay. It will become fresh north-westerly from the mid-morning.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy to cloudy and cool, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the extreme east from mid-morning. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-westerly.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the north. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly, becoming northerly at times.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy in the east, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning fog over the interior, otherwise fine to partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and rain in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to south-westerly in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh easterly to north-easterly.
