TUESDAY WEATHER: Heavy downpours, severe thunderstorms, flooding and damaging coastal winds

Very hot conditions are expected in places over the Namakwa district of the Northern Cape and West Coast district of the Western Cape, including the Cape Winelands, Cape Metropole, Overberg and the Little Karoo.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Tuesday:

A. level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms associated with heavy downpours that may result in flooding of low-lying bridges and roads, excessive lightning and small amounts of hail, damage to infrastructure and settlements due to strong damaging winds, are expected over the eastern parts of Mpumalanga and northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

B. level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms associated with heavy downpours that may result in localised flooding of low-lying bridges and roads, and damage to infrastructure and settlements due to strong damaging winds are expected over the central and western parts of KwaZulu-Natal the southern parts and escarpment areas of Mpumalanga, eastern parts of the Northern Cape, Free State, as well as vast parts of the North West.

C. level 1 warning for damaging winds resulting in localised disruption of small harbours/ports, difficulty in navigation of small boats, with a risk of taking water and capsizing in a locality, is expected between Oyster Bay and East London.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over Nama-Khoi municipality of the Northern Cape, Matzikama and Cederberg municipalities of the Western Cape.

GAUTENG
Cloudy and cool with afternoon scattered showers and thundershowers except in the north where it will be isolated an warm.

MPUMALANGA
Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the extreme north-west.

LIMPOPO
Partly cloudy in the west at first, otherwise cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the Lowveld.

NORTH-WEST
Cloudy and cool to warm, with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the extreme north-east where it will be partly cloudy.

THE FREE STATE
Cloudy and cool to warm, with scattered showers and thundershowers.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Partly cloudy to cloudy and warm to hot, with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate north-westerly, becoming light south-westerly from the afternoon.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Warm in places along the coast, otherwise fine and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy over the central and eastern parts with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers from the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to north-westerly but moderate to fresh easterly to south-easterly along the south coast.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Morning mist in places in the south, otherwise fine and warm. It will become partly cloudy in the afternoon with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north, spreading to the southern interior and reaching the Tsitsikamma Coast in the evening. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north-easterly.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy in the south with morning drizzle along the coast. It will be fine and warm over the interior, becoming partly cloudy with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers except the coast. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north-easterly.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning and evening fog in places over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy to cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-westerly until late morning, otherwise light southerly to south-easterly, becoming easterly to north-easterly in the south in the afternoon.
