More disruptive rain, thunderstorms and possible flooding indicated for Monday

Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the central and eastern areas of the country, as well as along the south coast, but widespread over KwaZulu-Natal and the along the Eastern Cape coast on Monday according to the SA Weather Service.

Mostly warm to hot temperatures are expected, but very hot in the extreme north-eastern parts of the country.

Cloudy and cool conditions are expected over the eastern parts of the country on Tuesday, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread over Gauteng and the eastern areas of North West.

According to the weather service, morning drizzle along the Escarpment regions of Limpopo and Mpumalanga on a Christmas Day but notably reduced distribution of showers and thundershowers. Sunny and dry with hot to very hot conditions can be expected across most of the Cape Provinces, with only the North West Province possibly experiencing scattered showers and thundershowers by late afternoon.

Weather for the Day of Goodwill includes isolated showers and thundershowers over most parts of the country, except for the north-eastern and south-western regions. Thunderstorms will be scattered across Gauteng, North West, Free State as well as over the northern parts of the Northern Cape.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Monday:

A. yellow level 2 warning for disruptive rain leading to localized flooding of settlements, low lying bridges, damage to infrastructure and difficult driving conditions is expected in places over KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng.

B. yellow level 1 warning for disruptive rain leading to localized flooding of settlements, roads, low lying bridges and difficult driving conditions is expected along the eastern coast of the Eastern Cape and its adjacent interior.

C. yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms leading to strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail, heavy downpours resulting in localized flooding and damage to infrastructure are expected over the western parts of North West.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over Kareeberg Local Municipality in the Northern Cape as well as Matzikama and Bergrivier Local Municipalities in the Western Cape.

1. GAUTENG
Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.
The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate

2. MPUMALANGA
Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

3. LIMPOPO
Cloudy in the extreme south, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot, but very hot in the Lowveld, with scattered showers and thundershowers.

4. NORTH WEST
Cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers but partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers in the west.

5. FREE STATE
Partly cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the west.

6. NORTHERN CAPE
Cloudy with fog patches in the west in the morning, otherwise fine and hot to very hot, but partly cloudy in the north-east with isolated showers and thundershowers. It will be warm in the west but windy over the eastern interior during the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south to south-easterly.

7. WESTERN CAPE
Cloudy and cool with light rain in places along the south coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot but fine in the west. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate west to south-westerly along the south coast in the morning, otherwise fresh to strong south to south-easterly.

8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and rain. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly, becoming south-easterly in the evening.

9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread showers and rain along the coast. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly, becoming south-easterly in the evening.

10. KWAZULU-NATAL
Partly cloudy and cool to warm, becoming cloudy from late morning with widespread showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly north of Durban in the morning, otherwise southerly to south-easterly.
