TUESDAY WEATHER: A foggy start across many parts of the country and a warning for thunderstorms

A cut-off low pressure system is expected to develop over the west of the country from Tuesday with associated surface low situated over the south-west. Severe thunderstorms are expected over the Karoo Hoogland (Northern Cape), Central Karoo, Overberg, Garden Route, and Cape Winelands districts (Western Cape) on Tuesday and Wednesday, spreading to the City of Cape Town and southern parts of the West Coast districts on Wednesday. These thunderstorms are expected to produce large amounts of small hail, excessive lightning and gusty winds (40-55 km/h).

Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Tuesday:

A. level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in much of the Western Cape, the southern part of the Northern Cape, the extreme east of the Eastern Cape, as well as parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the extreme east of the Free State as per the map.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Wednesday:

A. level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms over the southern part of the Northern Cape and the north-east of the Western Cape, as per the map.

B. level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in much of the Western Cape, many parts of the Eastern Cape and parts of KwaZulu-Natal as per the map.

GAUTENG
Partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

MPUMALANGA
Cloudy with morning fog patches in places over the Highveld, otherwise partly cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers. It will be warm in the Lowveld.

LIMPOPO
Cloudy in the morning with a chance of drizzle and fog patches along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in the central and south-eastern parts.

NORTH-WEST
Partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

THE FREE STATE
Morning fog patches in the east and along the Lesotho border, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Morning fog patches in the south, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers, except in the north-west. The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly to south-easterly.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Cloudy with morning fog along the south coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers, except over the extreme south-western parts. The wind along the coast will be moderate north-westerly along the west and south-west coast at first, otherwise moderate north-easterly becoming south-westerly from the afternoon.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Morning fog, south of escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm but cool along the coast. Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are expected but scattered in the west from the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be light north-easterly, becoming moderate easterly in the afternoon.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Morning fog, south of escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm. Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are expected. The wind along the coast will be light and variable, becoming moderate to fresh north-easterly towards midday.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning fog over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south-westerly, becoming easterly to north-easterly in the south from mid-morning, spreading northward in the afternoon.
