Thunderstorms and a level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall on Monday

A cut-off low pressure system will impact the southern, central, and eastern provinces from Sunday until Tuesday according to the SA Weather Service.

Scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers are expected over the central and eastern parts of the country, with a possibility of severe thunderstorms & disruptive rain along the east coast.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service (SAWS):

A. Orange level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall along the coast and adjacent interior between Port Alfred and Richards Bay resulting in flooding of roads and settlements, damage to infrastructure and mud-based houses as well as major disruption of traffic flow due to major roads being flooded or closed.

B. yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms over most parts of KwaZulu Natal, southern-western parts of Mpumalanga, Gauteng as well as Free State, North West Province and the extreme north-eastern parts of Northern Cape which may lead to damage to structures due to hail and wind, damage or loss of infrastructure, settlements (formal and informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock.

C. yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rain leading to localised flooding of settlements, roads, damage to property and infrastructure for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Kouga, Sundays River Valley, Makana, Ndlambe and Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipalities of Eastern Cape.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the extreme north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, in places in North West as well as in places in northern Limpopo.

Regional forecasts from SAWS for Monday:

1. GAUTENG
Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the south. The expected UVB sunburn index: High

2. MPUMALANGA
Cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread in the extreme south-west. It will be warm in the Lowveld.

3. LIMPOPO
Cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the extreme south and south-west. It will be hot in places in the extreme west.

4. NORTH WEST
Cloudy, windy and warm to hot, with scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the extreme south-east.

5. FREE STATE
Cloudy, windy and cool to warm, with widespread showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the north-west. It will be cold in the extreme east.

6. NORTHERN CAPE
Fine in the west, otherwise partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers over the east and south. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly to southerly.

7. WESTERN CAPE
Fine in the west, otherwise partly cloudy to cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in the east but scattered in the far east. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong easterly to south-easterly along the south-west coast and south coast. The expected UVB sunburn index: Very High

8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy in the north-west, otherwise cloudy and cold with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread along the coast. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong easterly.

9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and cold with widespread showers and thundershowers but scattered in the north-west. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong easterly.

10. KWAZULU-NATAL
Cloudy and cool with widespread showers and thundershowers but scattered in the extreme north-east. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly to north-easterly reaching strong at times in the south. The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate
