Thunderstorm warnings and heavy rain as another cut-off low is expected from Wednesday

Isolated showers and thundershowers can be expected over vast parts of the country, but scattered over the central, east central as well as in places in the west.

A cut-off low pressure system leading to changes in weather conditions is expected over the southern parts of the Western Cape from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. Thunderstorms with heavy downpours, hail, strong winds, and excessive lightning are likely, especially over the Overberg region, southern Cape Winelands and south-western Garden Route. Rainfall accumulation for these areas may reach 40-65 mm and higher in high-lying areas for this period.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service (SAWS) for Wednesday:

A. orange level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms resulting in damage to settlements/property, vehicles, infrastructure, disruptions to municipal services are expected in places along the Wild Coast and adjacent interior of the Eastern Cape.

B. yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms resulting in localized damage to settlements/property, temporary structures and difficult driving conditions over the eastern and northern parts of the Eastern Cape and the extreme southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

C. yellow level 3 warning for severe thunderstorms resulting in heavy downpours, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning are expected over the Witzenberg, Breede Valley, Langeberg municipalities and Overberg district of the Western Cape.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the southern parts of the Northern Cape.

Regional forecasts from SAWS for Wednesday:

1. GAUTENG
Partly cloudy and warm with isolated afternoon thunderstorms. The expected UVB sunburn index: Very High

2. MPUMALANGA
Cloudy in the east with morning drizzle, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the Lowveld where it will be hot.

3. LIMPOPO
Cloudy in the east with morning drizzle along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and hot to very hot with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south.

4. NORTH WEST
Fine in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and hot, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

5. FREE STATE
Fine and warm to hot, becoming partly cloudy, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers in the east, otherwise scattered.

6. NORTHERN CAPE
Partly cloudy, windy and hot to very hot, with scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the south-west, except along the coast and adjacent interior where it will be cloudy and cool to warm. The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly to south- westerly.

7. WESTERN CAPE
Cloudy to partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers from the afternoon except over the West Coast District. Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the Overberg and Cape Winelands District. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly to south- easterly but strong along the south-west coast. The expected UVB sunburn index: High

8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and warm with scattered thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly.

9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and warm with scattered thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly to north- easterly, becoming south-easterly in the late afternoon.

10. KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning fog patches over the south-eastern interior, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers except in the extreme north-eastern parts. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly reaching strong at times. The expected UVB sunburn index: Low
