A heatwave is on the cards for the weekend and then maybe snow next week

A heatwave with persistently high temperatures is expected over Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Free State, North West, as well as the north-eastern areas of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, from Saturday until Monday according to the SA Weather Service.

Extremely hot conditions are also expected in the Lowveld and Western Bushveld of Limpopo and the Lowveld of Mpumalanga on Sunday.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service (SAWS):

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the central and eastern parts of the Northern Cape, the northern interior of the Eastern Cape, and the central and western parts of the both the Free State and North West provinces.

Regional forecasts from SAWS for Saturday:

1. GAUTENG
Fine and hot, becoming partly cloudy in the south in the afternoon. It will be very hot in the north.
The expected UVB sunburn index: Very High

2. MPUMALANGA
Morning fog patches along the escarpment, otherwise fine and hot becoming partly cloudy on the Highveld in the afternoon. It will be very hot in the Lowveld.

3. LIMPOPO
Fine and hot to very hot.

4. NORTH-WEST PROVINCE
Fine and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy with isolated thundershowers in the west.

5. FREE STATE
Fine and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy with isolated thundershowers except in the south.

6. NORTHERN CAPE
Morning fog patches along the coast where it will be cool, otherwise fine and warm to hot but very hot over the central and eastern parts. It will become partly cloudy in the north-east with isolated afternoon thundershowers.
The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly.

7. WESTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy along the coast where it will be cool, otherwise fine and warm but hot over the Central Karoo. The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly to south-westerly but light in the morning.
The expected UVB sunburn index: Extreme

8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Morning fog patches in the south, otherwise partly cloudy and hot to very hot but cool along the coast.
The wind along the coast will be light westerly, becoming moderate to fresh south-westerly from late morning.

9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Morning fog patches south of the escarpment, otherwise fine and warm to hot but cool along the coast. It will become partly cloudy from the afternoon.
The wind along the coast will be light north-westerly at first, otherwise light to moderate south-easterly, becoming south-westerly in the evening.

10. KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and hot to very hot.
The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly, becoming light to moderate easterly to south-easterly south of Durban from late morning.
