SUNDAY WEATHER: A heat wave in parts of the Eastern Cape while more disruptive rainfall and thunderstorms in the east

A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected over the Eastern Cape, excluding the coast, on Sunday.

Hot and humid weather can be expected in places along the coast and adjacent interior between Port Alfred and Port Edward.

Very hot to extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected over the Namakwa district in the Northern Cape and in the Western Cape, except the southern parts of City of Cape Town and Garden route, as well as the Overberg District Western Cape.

Morning or evening fog can be expected in a few areas on Sunday.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Sunday:

A. level 2 warning for disruptive rain leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, settlements, and low-lying areas/bridges is expected over north-eastern Mpumalanga and Limpopo, except the extreme south-west.

B. level 1 warning for severe thunderstorms in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, as per the updated map above.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in places in the extreme west.

GAUTENG
Cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the south. It will be warm in the extreme north.

MPUMALANGA
Morning fog along the escarpment, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the south-west.

LIMPOPO
Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers.

NORTH-WEST
Cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the north-east.

THE FREE STATE
Partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Partly cloudy and warm to hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme east. The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly to south-easterly, becoming light and variable in the evening.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy and hot to very hot, but extremely hot along the west coast. It will be warm along the south coast. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected over the Central Karoo and extreme eastern parts of the Garden route from the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south-easterly, but fresh along the south-west coast.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated thundershowers in the extreme east. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate north-easterly.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning and evening fog patches, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected but scattered in the extreme north where it will be cloudy. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly to north-easterly, reaching fresh in places in the south in the afternoon.
