Multiple warnings for Sunday and more widespread rainfall possible as heat wave no longer indicated14 December 2024 [updated 15 December]By Staff Writer

Rain and showers can be expected along the south-west coast, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the eastern parts of the country on Sunday, according to the SA Weather Service (SAWS). Mostly warm to hot temperatures but very hot in places over the central parts of the country. Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Sunday: A. yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms causing heavy downpours, large amounts of small hail, strong damaging winds and excessive lightning that will result in localised flooding of susceptible settlements, roads and low-lying areas, localised damage to properties as well as localised disruptions to municipal services are expected over North West, Gauteng, extreme south western Mpumalanga and eastern and central parts of Free State as well as the western parts of Kwa-Zulu Natal and extreme eastern parts of the Easter Cape. B. yellow level 1 warning for damaging winds leading to difficulty in navigation at sea, and small vessels at risk of capsizing in locality is expected between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay as well as between Coffee Bay and Port Edwards. C. yellow level 1 warning for strong damaging winds that could lead to localised damage to settlements both formal and informal are expected in places over Chris Hani District Municipality, Walter Sisulu Local Municipality and Senqu Local Municipality as well as the central and the southern parts of Northern Cape and over the western parts of Free State. Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the eastern parts of the Northern Cape, western parts of North West and Free State as well as the north eastern parts of the Western Cape as well as the western parts of the Eastern Cape. Regional forecasts from SAWS for Sunday: 1. GAUTENG Partly cloudy and hot with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the north. The expected UVB sunburn index: High 2. MPUMALANGA Cloudy at first with morning drizzle along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm, but hot in the lowveld, with isolated afternoon thundershowers over the highveld. 3. LIMPOPO Cloudy in the morning with fog and drizzle over the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated afternoon thundershowers over the western bushveld. 4. NORTH WEST Fine, windy and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers. 5. FREE STATE Fine, windy, and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers. 6. NORTHERN CAPE Fine, windy, and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers over the eastern parts. It will be cool to warm in the extreme west. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south to south-easterly. 7. WESTERN CAPE Cloudy and cool along the south, with isolated rain and showers in the south and south-west, otherwise partly cloudy and warm, but fine in the extreme north-east. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south to south-westerly, but fresh to strong westerly to north-westerly along the south and the south-west coast, becoming strong to gale south-westerly from the afternoon, but moderate in the evening. The expected UVB sunburn index: Very High 8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE Fine, windy and very hot and extremely hot, but warm along the coast, becoming cloudy with isolated showers along the coast and adjacent interior from late afternoon into the night. The wind along the coast will be Strong gale force south-westerly. 9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE Cloudy with fog in the southern Drakensberg area at first, otherwise fine and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the north. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly, becoming fresh to strong south-westerly from afternoon. 10. KWAZULU-NATAL Morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot but very hot in places in the north with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the south and south-western parts.
