CUT-OFF LOW: Warnings issued for disruptive rain, thunderstorms, wind and waves – hail and lightning expected

A cut-off low pressure system developing west of the country is expected to affect the Western and Northern Cape provinces from Sunday into Monday.

The public and small stock farmers are advised of intermittent showers and thundershowers, accompanied by heavy downpours at times with possible large amounts of small hail and lightning, a significant drop in temperatures over the high-lying areas, windy coastal and interior conditions as well as very rough seas (reaching 4-4.5m south of Table Bay).

Warnings from the SA Weather Service:

A. level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall resulting in rainfall accumulations of 25-50mm over the eastern Namakwa and the Central Karoo (Western Cape) districts reaching 60-80mm until Monday. This may lead to the displacement of affected communities, flooding of settlements, low-lying areas and closure of some bridges and roads as well as some mountain passes.

B. level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with excessive lightning leading to localised injuries (human and livestock) and service disruption due to power disruptions over the Nama Khoi and Kamiesberg municipalities (Northern Cape) from Sunday morning, spreading to the West Coast, Cape Winelands, City of Cape Town and Overberg districts (Western Cape) from Sunday afternoon.

C. level 2 warning for damaging wind resulting in localised damage to formal and informal settlements as well as localised damage to temporary structures over the north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape and western parts of the North West.

D. level 1 warning for damaging wind and waves leading to difficulty in navigation at sea and small vessels at risk of capsizing between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas.

Morning fog patches over the eastern parts, otherwise fine and warm.

LIMPOPO
Morning fog patches in the south-eastern parts, otherwise fine and warm but hot in places in the Western Bushveld.

Fine and warm, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon.

THE FREE STATE
Fine and warm, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south-west.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Partly cloudy and warm to hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered over the central parts and western parts where it will be cloudy and cool. The wind along the coast will be moderate northerly to north-westerly.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Warm in places over the West Coast District, otherwise cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be moderate northerly along the west and south-west coast but fresh to strong easterly along the south coast.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Warm in places in the north-east, otherwise cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly, becoming fresh to strong north-easterly from the afternoon.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Morning fog and light rain in places south of the escarpment otherwise, cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the south-west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly, reaching strong in places from the afternoon.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning and evening fog patches over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy to cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and rain and showers in the south where it will be cloudy. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly to north-easterly, reaching fresh at times.
