Fog and light rain on the coast and some severe thunderstorm warnings for Monday12 October 2024 [updated 13 October]By Staff Writer
The full Monday forecast will be posted later on Sunday afternoon. A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected until Sunday over the extreme north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, in places over Limpopo and Mpumalanga as well as Gauteng while persisting until Monday over the eastern and central parts of the North West and Free State. Warnings from the SA Weather Service (SAWS): A. yellow level 2 warning for wind and waves leading to difficulty in navigation at sea as well as small vessels and personal watercrafts at risk of taking on water and capsizing in locality is expected between Cape Agulhas and Alexander Bay on Monday. B. yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with excessive lightning, strong and damaging winds, hail and heavy downpours leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads and localised damage to infrastructure is expected over the north-eastern parts of the Free State, north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the eastern Highveld and escarpment of Mpumalanga on Monday. Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in places over the central and western interior of the Northern Cape, the western parts of the North West province, the Central Karoo of the Western Cape, the north-western parts of the Eastern Cape and the Valley and Western Bushveld of Limpopo. Regional forecasts from SAWS for Sunday: 1. GAUTENG Fine and hot but very hot in the extreme north. The expected UVB sunburn index: Extreme 2. MPUMALANGA Early morning fog patches along the escarpment, otherwise fine and warm to hot but very hot in the Lowveld. 3. LIMPOPO Early morning fog patches along the escarpment, otherwise fine and hot, but very hot in places in the western Bushveld, Limpopo Valley and the Lowveld. 4. NORTH WEST Fine and hot to very hot. 5. FREE STATE Fine and hot. 6. NORTHERN CAPE Fine and hot to very hot but partly cloudy in the west where it will be windy from the afternoon. It will be cool along the coast with morning fog patches. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly becoming strong from the afternoon. 7. WESTERN CAPE Morning fog patches over the western and southern interior, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm but hot to very hot over the Central Karoo. It will become cloudy along the south coast with light rain in the evening. The wind along the coast will be light and variable along the south coast becoming moderate to fresh westerly from the afternoon, otherwise moderate to fresh south-easterly to southerly. The expected UVB sunburn index: Very High 8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE Cloudy and cool to warm in the south with morning fog patches and light evening rain, otherwise partly cloudy and hot to very hot. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-westerly, but south-easterly during the afternoon. 9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE Cloudy with fog patches and light rain in places along the coast and adjacent interior in the morning and again from the evening, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot but very hot in the west. It will be fine in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-westerly in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh north-easterly. It will become south-easterly in the south from the afternoon. 10. KWAZULU-NATAL Morning fog patches in the north-east, otherwise fine and warm to hot but partly cloudy along the coast. It will be very hot in places in the north. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate easterly to north-easterly, becoming fresh to strong in places in the south by late afternoon.
