TUESDAY WEATHER: Level 9 warning with disruptive rainfall, widespread flooding and other significant impacts

There is a likelihood of severe impacts around Thohoyandou, Thengwe, Kruger, Mukumbani, Graskop, Malale, Phunda-Maria and areas near major rivers such as the Olifants, Sabie, Letaba River etc through Tuesday and Wednesday.

A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected over the Central and Little Karoo districts, as well as Witzenberg Municipality of the Western Cape, over most of the Northern and Eastern Cape, the southern half of North West, and the Free State until Wednesday.

Very hot to extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected over the north-eastern, in places over the eastern parts and over the Cape Winelands of the Western Cape as well as Khai-Ma Municipality of the Northern Cape until Wednesday.

Hot and humid and uncomfortable conditions are expected over the north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Tuesday:

A. level 9 warning for disruptive rainfall resulting in widespread flooding of roads and settlements, widespread mudslides, rockfalls and soil erosion, danger to life due to fast flowing stream, widespread damage to property, building and loss of livelihood and livestock as well as possible widespread displacement of affected communities is expected over the eastern areas of Mopani District Municipality and Limpopo Valley of Limpopo and Bushbuckridge Local Municipality of Mpumalanga.

B. level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall resulting in flooding of roads and settlements (formal and informal), mudslides rockfalls and soil erosion, danger to life due to fast flowing stream, damage to property, infrastructure, loss of Livelihood and livestock is expected over the escarpment of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

C. level 2 warning for disruptive rainfall resulting in localised flooding of susceptible formal/informal settlements or roads, low-lying areas and bridges, localised mudslides, rockfalls and soil erosion is expected in places over the central and eastern parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo, as well as the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

D. level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over the western part of KwaZulu-Natal, as per the updated map above.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over vast parts of Northern Cape, the western parts of Free State, south-western parts of North West.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Cloudy along the coast in the morning, where it will be warm along the coast, otherwise fine and hot to very hot with isolated thundershowers in the east. The wind along the coast will be light and variable in the morning, becoming moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Cloudy in places in the morning as well in the evening with fog patches over the south coast and interior, otherwise fine and hot to very hot but partly cloudy along the south coast where it will be warm. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly between Cape Agulhas and Strandfontein at first, becoming moderate to fresh south-westerly but light and variable along the south coast by the late afternoon.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Morning fog along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot but very hot in the extreme north with isolated thunderstorms over the interior. The wind along the coast will be moderate westerly to south-westerly, becoming light and variable in the late afternoon.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Morning fog along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated thunderstorms over the interior. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh westerly to south-westerly, becoming moderate southerly to south-easterly in the afternoon.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning fog in the west and south-east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the extreme north. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly north of Margate, otherwise light to moderate southerly to south-westerly spreading to Mandeni by late morning.
