Level 5 warning for disruptive rain and cooler weather in the east on Monday

Warm to hot in the west, but cooler in the east on Monday, according to the SA Weather Service (SAWS).

Scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers are expected over the central and eastern parts of the country, with disruptive rainfall over the north eastern areas expected to result in flooding.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Monday:

A. orange level 5 warning disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of roads and Settlements (formal and informal), damage to property, infrastructure, loss of livelihood and livestock, and major disruption of traffic flow due to major roads being flooded or closed, is expected over Limpopo and Mpumalanga, except for the extreme south-western parts of both provinces.

B. yellow level 2 warning disruptive rainfall leading to localised flooding and damage to settlements and infrastructure, low-lying areas and bridges, is expected over the northern parts of Gauteng, the extreme south-western parts of both Limpopo and Mpumalanga as well as the Wild Coast areas of the Eastern Cape.

C. yellow level 2 warning severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, possible strong gusty winds and hail, leading to localised flooding of roads and settlements, displacement of affected communities and localised damage to formal and informal structures are expected over the south-western parts of North West and the west-central parts of Free State.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the north-central and eastern parts of the Northern Cape, extreme south-western parts of the North West, and the extreme western parts of the Free State.

Regional forecasts from SAWS for Monday:

1. GAUTENG
Cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread in the north where it will be warm in places.
The expected UVB sunburn index: Low

2. MPUMALANGA
Cloudy and cool with widespread showers and thundershowers but scattered in the extreme south-western parts.

3. LIMPOPO
Cloudy and cool to warm with widespread showers and thundershowers.

4. NORTH WEST
Partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.

5. FREE STATE
Cool in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the extreme west.

6. NORTHERN CAPE
Cool along the coast where it will be cloudy in the morning, otherwise fine and warm to hot, but very hot in places in the east where it will become partly cloudy. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly.

7. WESTERN CAPE
Cloudy in the east at first with a chance of light rain along the coast in the morning, otherwise fine and warm to hot but partly cloudy along the south coast. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly to south-easterly but southerly to south-westerly north of Saldanha Bay.

8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and cool with a chance light rain in places along the coast, clearing in the afternoon, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly, becoming north-easterly in places in the afternoon.

9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread over the eastern parts. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly, becoming north-easterly in the afternoon.

10. KWAZULU-NATAL
Cloudy and cool to warm but cold in places in the south-west. Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected but isolated in the extreme north-east. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly to south-easterly becoming north-easterly in the south from the afternoon, spreading to Richards Bay in the evening.
