More widespread rain and strong wind on Friday but still hot in parts

A weak cold front followed by a ridging high-pressure system is expected to pass south of the country from Thursday afternoon into Friday.

A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected over Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Free State and the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal until at least Saturday.

Extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected over the north-eastern parts of KZN, Lowveld of Mpumalanga, as well as Lowveld, Valley and Western Bushveld of Limpopo.

Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the central and eastern parts of the country on Saturday, as well as isolated showers along the south-west coast on Sunday.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service (SAWS) for Friday:

A. yellow level 1 warning for damaging winds leading to difficulty in navigation at sea, and small vessels at risk of capsizing in locality is expected between Table Bay and Plettenberg Bay.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the central and eastern parts of Northern Cape, western parts of Free State and over Walter Sisulu and Makana Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape as well as Greater Giyani and Ba-Phalaborwa Local Municipalities in Limpopo.

1. GAUTENG
Very hot in the north, otherwise partly cloudy and hot with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Fine in the Lowveld in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and hot to very hot with isolated afternoon thundershowers, except in the Lowveld where it will be extremely hot. It will

Fine in the eastern and northern parts in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and very hot to extremely hot with isolated afternoon thundershowers in the south.

4. NORTH WEST
Fine and very hot, becoming partly cloudy with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

5. FREE STATE
Fine and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy in the east with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

6. NORTHERN CAPE
Partly cloudy and cool to warm in the west and southern parts, otherwise fine, windy and hot to very hot. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly.

7. WESTERN CAPE
Cloudy and cool to warm with isolated light showers and rain along the coastal areas and adjacent interior, clearing in the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh westerly to south-westerly but strong in the south.

8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and warm but cool along the coast and adjacent interior. Isolated light showers are expected along the coast and adjacent interior. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-westerly.

9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Fine and warm in the extreme north, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated to scattered light showers and rain in the east from morning. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly, becoming strong by afternoon.

10. KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning fog patches in the south, otherwise cloudy and warm to hot but very hot to extremely hot in the north with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly to north-easterly in the extreme north at first, otherwise moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly.
