A heat wave through the weekend and a high fire risk to go with it

A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected in places over the extreme north-eastern parts of Eastern Cape until Sunday, but from Friday, persisting until at least Monday over Gauteng, in places over Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State, eastern parts of Northern Cape and north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Warnings from the SA Weather Service (SAWS):

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the central and north-eastern parts of Northern Cape as well as the south-western parts of Eastern Cape and north-eastern parts of Western Cape.

Regional forecasts from SAWS for Thursday:

1. GAUTENG
Partly cloudy and warm but hot in the north. The expected UVB sunburn index: Very High

2. MPUMALANGA
Fine and warm, but hot over the Lowveld, becoming partly cloudy with isolated thundershowers along the northern escarpment in the afternoon.

3. LIMPOPO
Fine and warm to hot, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon with isolated thundershowers along the escarpment.

4. NORTH-WEST PROVINCE
Partly cloudy and warm to hot.

5. FREE STATE
Partly cloudy and warm to hot.

6. NORTHERN CAPE
Partly cloudy becoming fine and warm to hot but very hot in the west. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate north to north-easterly, becoming south to south-westerly from the afternoon.

7. WESTERN CAPE
Morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise cloudy and cool with a chance light rain over the extreme south-western parts and along the extreme east coast, but fine, windy and warm in north-east, while hot in places over the extreme north-eastern parts. It will become partly cloudy along the coast during the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north to north-westerly, but west to south-westerly along the south coast. It will become moderate south-westerly north of Lambert's Bay and north-westerly along the south coast from the evening. The expected UVB sunburn index: High

8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Fine and hot to very hot, but cool to warm along the coast. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly.

9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Very hot in the eastern parts, otherwise fine and hot but warm along the coast. The wind along the coast will be moderate north-easterly becoming moderate south-westerly in the evening.

10. KWAZULU-NATAL
Partly cloudy with morning fog in places in the extreme north-east, otherwise fine and warm but hot in places in the central and eastern parts. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly, becoming strong in places in the afternoon. The expected UVB sunburn index: Extreme
