Severe thunderstorms and disruptive rain in the east on Monday9 February 2025 [updated 10 February]By Staff Writer

There will be isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the central and eastern parts of the country, with severe thunderstorms expected over Gauteng, the Free State and North West on Monday. It will be cool in places in the east, otherwise warm to hot but very hot in the Northern Cape, according to the SA Weather Service. Warnings from the SA Weather Service for Monday: A. yellow level 2 warning severe thunderstorms resulting in damaging winds, excessive lighting, hail and heavy downpours leading to localized flooding of susceptible low-lying areas, roads and bridges, and localized damage to property and infrastructure, are expected over the Gauteng, eastern parts of the Free State and North West, south-western bushveld of Limpopo, western Highveld of Mpumalanga as well as the extreme western and north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. B. yellow level 2 warning disruptive rainfall resulting in localized flooding of informal settlements, low-lying areas and bridges as well as dirt roads is expected in places over the Lowveld and Valley of Limpopo. C. yellow level 1 warning damaging wind and waves resulting difficulty in navigation at sea is expected between Alexander Bay and Cape Agulhas. Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Western interior and central parts of the Northern Cape as well as the West Coast District Municipality of the Western Cape. Regional forecasts from SAWS for Monday: 1. GAUTENG Cloudy and warm with scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers. The UVB index: Moderate 2. MPUMALANGA Morning fog patches over the southern Highveld, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers but isolated in the east. 3. LIMPOPO Cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated over the central parts. It will be cool in places along the escarpment. 4. NORTH WEST Fine in the west at first, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot, with scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers but isolated in the west. 5. FREE STATE Partly cloudy with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, except in the west where it will be fine in the morning. 6. NORTHERN CAPE Fine and hot to very hot, becoming partly cloudy in the far east, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme south-eastern parts. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-easterly. 7. WESTERN CAPE Partly cloudy and warm with isolated light rain and showers along the coast and adjacent interior by the afternoon. It will cool along the south coast. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly, but strong to near gale south-easterly along the south-west coast, and moderate to fresh easterly. 8. WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE Cloudy in places along the coast and adjacent interior with isolated showers and rain, otherwise partly cloudy. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-easterly, becoming easterly in the afternoon 9. EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE Cloudy and cool with scattered showers and rain, south of escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-westerly. 10. KWAZULU-NATAL Morning fog patches in places over the interior, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be moderate south-easterly, becoming fresh in the north by afternoon.
