Significant and low-level snowfall expected for parts of SA from Monday

Snow is expected across a number of provinces in South Africa from Monday lunchtime, with low-level snow below 1000m in the Western Cape. Lesotho may get light snow and Namibia may also see snow falling on the mountains, as it does from time to time.

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning of significant snow for southern Namakwa, Cederberg, Witzenberg, Breede Valley municipalities that may lead to a loss of vulnerable livestock and crops.

At this point though heavier snow at lower levels is looking more likely in the west and south of the country, with lighter snow towards the east.

Low-level snow that is accessible with normal vehicles is expected in some of the areas shown on the map. The snowfall on some mountain passes will likely result in them being closed and visitors should consider the possibility that driving conditions will likely be hazardous.

The areas marked in purple on the map may get up to 30cm falling on the high peaks. Table Mountain may get a few centimetres of snow too.

More detail will be added to this forecast this morning, but today is actually NOT a good day for snow chasing with the family as conditions will be challenging, especially on some of the passes. The low-level snow will likely last quite few days so adventures will be more fun after the weather has passed.

Snow chasers are reminded to please respect private property and farm fences. Farming is challenging enough without dealing with damage from travelers.
