More low-level snowfall is possible from late on Wednesday in the west, mainly through Thursday and possibly into the early hours of Friday morning in the east as per the map above.

The SA Weather Service has now issued a level 1 warning for disruptive snowfall resulting in icing on roads and disruptions in mountain passes in the high-lying regions between Graaff-Reinet and Komani (Queenstown).

Some of the Western Cape peaks look likely to receive between 5cm and 15cm of snowfall, including around Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington, Franschhoek, Tulbagh, Worcester, Robertson, Montagu and Ceres.

Light low-level snowfall is possible in areas such as the Koue Bokkeveld and around Matroosberg Reserve outside Ceres, but with the freezing level where it currently is it may not settle on the ground or could fall slightly higher up the mountains.

Elsewhere in the Western Cape the mountains around Greyton, McGregor, Swellendam, Ladismith, Oudtshoorn, De Rust, Beaufort West, Uniondale and Murraysburg are on the radar for some snowfall.

In the Northern Cape the high ground around Sutherland is on the radar for some light snowfall. The high ground near Fraserburg, Loxton and Richmond are also indicated for light snowfall but this is less likely at this stage.

Light snowfall is also indicated for the high ground in parts of the Eastern Cape, including around Willowmore, Graaff-Reinet, Cradock, Hogsback and Seymour. Areas where the high ground is also indicated but with a lower probability are around Middelburg, Sterkstroom, Molteno, Dordrecht, Barkly East, Lady Grey and Rhodes.

The higher ground in the south-west of Lesotho is indicated for light snowfall but with a low probablity.

If you are planning to travel through areas that may get snow this winter it is worth being prepared by reading our article on safe winter travel.

The map indicates where we are seeing the possibility of snow, but it may not fall in all of the areas shown on the map. As with any forecast of any kind (temperature, clouds, rain, wind), what eventually happens may or may not be similar to the forecast. Snow indicated may reduce or vanish completely in some areas, or the dates and times may change.
