More snowfall for Lesotho and South Africa this week

Snowfall is indicated for Lesotho from late on Tuesday, through Wednesday and into Thursday this week, and there is a small chance of light snow for the Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal high-ground.

Snow has fallen on the Drakensberg overnight already, with more possible through Wednesday.

In the Eastern Cape there is a chance of a light dusting of snowfall on the high-ground around Barkly Pass, Rhodes, Naude's Nek and Tiffindell Ski Resort (not currently operating).

In Lesotho more snowfall is indicated for much of the higher ground including between Afriski and Sani Pass, Semonkong and the south-west. Over 10cm of snowfall is possible in the east of Lesotho, as marked in purple on the map.

In KwaZulu-Natal light snowfall is indicated for higher elevations across much of the Drakensberg, with a smaller chance of snow coming lower down the mountains (including Sani Pass).

In the Free State the high ground around Phuthaditjhaba is on the radar for possible light snowfall.

The snow outside of Lesotho is much less likely and really depends on how the freezing and moisture levels change.

A year ago the N3 snow disaster resulted in thousands of people stranded for days in thick snow, but this forecast does NOT include that kind of low-level snow at all.
