Widespread snowfall is on the radar in South Africa and Lesotho from Wednesday until Saturday NEXT WEEK with snow indicated for eight South African provinces including Gauteng.

At this point the data indicates the possibility for snowfall across parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, the Northern Cape, the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape in South Africa, as well as Lesotho.

Early data indicates the possibility of heavy snow in parts of the Eastern Cape, the Free State, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho but the map above only indicates where it's possible and NOT how much yet. We will update this in the coming days since it will definitely change.

At this stage there is potential for significant impacts on travel in some parts of South Africa and Lesotho.

Low-level snow is indicated for major roads such as the N1, N3, N4, N9 and N11 but more detail will be available closer to the time.

Hikers that are expecting to be in the Drakensberg on Sunday onwards need to be well prepared for conditions that may result in them being snowed in for a few days.

This forecast will definitely change over the coming days.

The map indicates where we are seeing the possibility of snow, but it may not fall in all of the areas shown on the map. As with any forecast of any kind (temperature, clouds, rain, wind), what eventually happens may or may not be similar to the forecast. Snow indicated may reduce or vanish completely in some areas, or the dates and times may change.
