Very light snowfall is possible for the "long weekend" starting on Thursday 1 May 2025 for South Africa and Lesotho.

Very cold, wet and windy conditions are expected over parts of the Northern Cape, Cape Winelands, Central and Little Karoo municipalities of the Western Cape until Friday.

In South Africa the forecast data indicates the POSSIBILITY of light snowfall mainly in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape high ground as per the map.

Any snowfall is NOT looking like it will cause any travel challenges.

The high ground around regular snow areas in the Western Cape might get a light dusting of snow from Thursday, while the Swartberg range and peaks around Uniondale and Graaff-Reinet are also on the radar.

The high ground in the east of Lesotho might also get some light snow.

Since a lot of people will likely be travelling during this period the advance forecasts were important IN CASE this snow event unfolded as per the early data.

If you are planning to travel through areas that may get heavy snow sometimes it is worth being prepared by reading our article on safe winter travel.

The map indicates where we are seeing the possibility of snow, but it may not fall in all of the areas shown on the map. As with any forecast of any kind (temperature, clouds, rain, wind), what eventually happens may or may not be similar to the forecast. Snow indicated may reduce or vanish completely in some areas, or the dates and times may change.
