Easter Snow? Snow possible for Lesotho and South Africa from Tuesday

With temperatures already dropping well below 10°C in parts of South Africa this weekend, it should come as no surprise that snow is on the radar for during the week too as a cut-off low looks possible for the region.

In the Eastern Cape the high-peaks near Rhodes, including Naude's Nek Pass and Tiffindell Ski Resort (closed) may get some snow on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

In Lesotho snow is currently indicated for around Afriski Mountain Resort and on the peaks around Sani Pass, as well as in the more remote south-west and central regions as per the map.

Anything from light snow in the areas marked in white on the map to around 20cm is possible in areas marked in purple.

While the freezing level is currently indicated as quite high, it's always possible that snow falls lower than the data indicates as we saw on the Swartberg mountains in the Western Cape in late March.

NO low-level snow is expected on normal public roads in South Africa.

If you are planning to travel near Rhodes in the Eastern Cape or into Lesotho this week it is best to prepare for the conditions by reading our article on safe winter travel.

While snow is not currently in the forecast for the Easter weekend itself, the snow that may fall this week may still be visible on the peaks on the weekend depending on how much falls and how fast it melts.

Note that this forecast may still change. It may reduce or vanish completely in some areas, or the timing may change.

The map indicates where we are seeing the possibility of snow, but it may not fall in all of the areas shown on the map. As with any forecast of any kind (temperature, clouds, rain, wind), what eventually happens may or may not be similar to the forecast.
