More disruptive low-level snow this weekend for the Western Cape and Northern Cape

Snow in still visible on some of the Western Cape high-peaks and more is expected from Friday until Sunday, as per our map.

More lighter snow is likely on the Western Cape high-peaks on Friday, and up to 15cm of fresh snow looks set to fall on the Western Cape mountains on Saturday. More snow is also possible on Sunday but not as low down as on Saturday.

Areas expected to get snow include the peaks around Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington, Tulbagh, Rawsonville, Worcestor, De Doorns, Villiersdorp, Grabouw, as well the Cederberg and the Koue Bokkeveld.

The low-level snowfall is mainly indicated for Saturday afternoon and overnight and may be as low down as 1500m. This is not as low as earlier in the week but there is a chance of some snow falling on the Bo-Swaarmoed Road near Matroosberg Reserve, the Theronsberg Pass (R46) and the Rooihoogte Pass (R318) on Saturday afternoon.

Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve outside Franschhoek looks like it will get a good amount of fresh snow from Saturday afternoon but for those wanting to do some hiking Sunday would be a better day. Please read our article on snow safety below.

There is also a small chance of a very light dusting or flurries on the Swartberg Pass late on Saturday evening.

Some snow is also possible on the high ground around Sutherland in the Northern Cape on Saturday and into Sunday.

The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for disruptive snow is expected over the mountainous regions of the Witzenberg Local Municipality in the Western Cape and Karoo Hoogland Local Municipality in the Northern Cape for Saturday evening and Sunday.
