Meteorite explodes over South Africa and fragments are found in Kirkwood

A meteorite was filmed shooting across the sky above South Africa early on Sunday morning by Zoë van der Merwe and her friends MC Fereira and Stephen Sharp and this was followed by a loud explosion that could be heard as far away as Mossel Bay.

Snow Report Southern Africa was also sent these photos of what appear to be meteorite fragments from Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape by Jes after they were found by her daughter while still warm.

Reports of the event were received by Snow Report from Wilderness, Hoekwil, George, Somerset East, Nelson Mandela Bay, between Upington and Grobblershoop and between Noupoort and Middelburg.
