Snow possible from tonight and early next week17 June 2021 [updated 25 June]By Staff Writer
Snow from Friday afternoon is looking likely, and the data seems to be less volatile now. While just a light dusting of snow is currently indicated for the Western Cape peaks on Friday and Saturday, the freezing level may drop as low as 1300m from Monday and this could result in as much as 20cm of snow falling in the area. At this point the snow indicated for the rest of the Western Cape, as well as the Northern Cape, the Eastern Cape and Lesotho, is expected from Monday next week unless conditions change. It is important to note that while we've seen a dramatic reduction in the forecast closer the time for this snow event, this is NOT always the case and the recent large snow event in Lesotho saw a dramatic increase at the last minute after a reduction leading up to it. The large low-level snowfall in the Western Cape in 2018 was also a case like this, with 30cm on low-level snow suddenly appearing in the forecast just a day or so beforehand. We also often seen snow falling at much lower levels than even the last minute the data indicated. The map indicates where SnowReportSA is seeing the possibility of snow, but it may not fall in all of the areas shown on the map. Conditions may still change and SnowReportSA will post updates on the weekend.
