Pretoria - it was a hail storm. 1 November 1985. This is Paul Kruger and Minnaar Street intersection.

This picture was taken on 10 Sept 1981. In the background are 2 prominent hostels of the then RAU, Kruinsig and Amper daar. This was the day after RAU Spring day festival.

That is a picture taken in October 1985 in Schoeman Street in Pretoria. It was a massive hailstorm. Note the people in Army uniforms.

It was snow. My parents have lots of photos of that day.

That is hail... not snow...

I was in Hillbrow on that day in September 1981, I worked for a company in Pretoria Street. It started off as a beautiful spring day, and ended in about 35 cm of snow. No joke, it happened.

Pretoria received very little snow on the 10th September 1981 if I recall. I remember Jozi clearly

Maria Paton I was there. It started off as a typical spring day. I had a dress with a bolero and high heel sandals. By mid morning it was snowing. Most people were dressed I summer clothes. I had hypothermia. We had to wait hours for a bis. I eventually took off my sandals and started walking. I didn't want to be waiting in the dark. My grab was frantic. Needless to say all the people waiting for the number thirteen bus started to walk together. I was put in a bath with warm water and given pea soup and put to bed. I had a nasty cold. My feet were frozen. I spent a week in bed with a serious cold and flu

There was indeed snow in JHB September of '81.

It couldn't have been to cold, judging by their clothes.

Again with the identifying of hail as snow.๐Ÿคฃ This is a picture from downtown Pretoria after the severe Nov 1985 hailstorm as Brenda pointed out.

This was hail in Pretoria, not snow in Jbg

I remember that day in September in Joburg. It was the year we came back to SA from England.

Nou die dag deur my goed gegaan en kom toe op die af. Datum 9 Julie 1996

The image above is hail... I was at John Orr Tech off Empire road in 1981 when we had actual snow... I remember clearly as we froze our buns off on the school field trying to roll a snowman...

We were visiting my grandparents in alberton and even build a massive snowman. Have a couple of photos of it as well. Definitely 1981 johannesburg

Still have my picture of that day

I lived there in 1981 and remember the snow.

It did snow that year. It was either August or September. We were able to make snowmen in the park near the Park Lane Clinic ...

It was snow. Not hail or anything else. My dad passed away on a business trip up in transvaal It was funeral on the 8th of September. I remember it clearly as everyone said it was a miracle when it started snowing and I was hoping for a different miracle. My bday was the 12th.

It was on my 9th Birthday. We have photos of us standing in the snow that day in Edenvale Springs.

Remember it clearly - left our offices at Eastgate and went and played in the snow. Slush

It was definitely snow

It snowed in Middelburg Transvaal as well

My then boyfriend now husband of 37 years was in the Kruger park. It was also snowing there

Last year in August we saw an amazing 60+cm of snow falling in under 24 hours in the Eastern Cape, and it turned Tiffindell Ski Resort into a landscape that resembles the scenes we're seeing from North America and Europe over the last few months. SnowReportSA's Richard Le Sueur was there to capture these images and some amazing video footage which we will post shortly too. It was an amazing adventure that included skiing off-piste in thick powder snow. Glenda Morgan you guys are even making headlines in SA with your snow ๐Ÿคฃ

We were in the USA in 1985 and visited the Grand Canyon when they were experiencing their coldest winter in 60 years. It was incredibly beautiful but blinking cold!!!

This past week or so we had decent snow here in the Las Vegas Valley too, interesting!!... I miss the Canyon Michele, going there 3 times a week for about 10 years and now still not over the op is killing me ๐Ÿ™ oh well, not long now... winters were always my favorite time there, except driving in the snow and ice is noooo fun at all!!... I see Ralph and Naomi got hammered in Flagstaff which is not far from the South Rim... they have a mountain range close to town, and the highest peak in Arizona is right there, Mt Humphreys, it must be beautiful right now, one can see it from miles away all covered with snow.... hope y'all are doing good, and thanks for tagging me in the snap.

Snow Report SA

You all know our famous online snow forecast maps like the one below, but this season we're introducing an exciting new initiative to promote winter and snow tourism in South Africa and Lesotho. In a few weeks time we will begin distribution of our new printed Snow Tourism Maps that show where, how much and how often it snows in various parts of South Africa and the routes to get to the snow regions. The maps will also highlight places to stay on your snow adventures and other snow-related businesses. We will also be able to send our followers copies via post for a small fee (message us if youโ€™re interested). Should your guest house, hotel, restaurant, tourism office or other public venue wish to receive some of these maps, or your brand would like to be involved, then please send us a direct message and we'll add you to the list when we do our distribution tour in early March (before the snow season really starts to give people something to plan their winter holidays with). NOTE: The printed maps will be much more detailed than our online snow maps like the one on this post. ... See MoreSee Less

I donโ€™t think itโ€™s anything really unusual. There is documented snowfall on the berg every month of year...every year ....as far as Iโ€™m aware ...:

Nooo I'm not ready for the cold season to start.

Looking forwart to Winter. Thick pea and ham soup.

Looking forward to Winter

This a bit of hail yesterday outside Underberg.

Climate change is not a joke, our crops will now be destroyed by unfavourable temperatures๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ•

Anneke Rebecca Van Belle Andrew Heald Jean-Paul Van Belle, so the weather Gods di partially grant my request fro a weather exchange, but just a little far away...

Oh dear... we haven't had much summer yet in Gonubie

I think this could mean we in for a very cold winter...๐Ÿ˜ซ

Snow melts and gives us water

No no no....Iโ€™m not ready for Winter!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ญ

๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜Yeah cant wait for winter to come.

The summer just started beginning of Dec here in Knysna. Not ready for winter.

Its not so good its affecting the bird life badly

Snowing In Devon UK at the moment too.

I hope this is a sign of whatโ€™s coming this winter.

Uncanny as it's just started snowing here in Poole, Dorset, UK ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑโ„๏ธ

No wonder we had a chill here this morning in JHB.

wow, snow in January??? That is almost like Christmas in July

No surprise there really, it alwatlys snows in Lesotho. Itz been know on to snow on Christmas day as well. The peaks were always visible and coukd been seen from Ladysmith

Winter is coming.....

Leaves are dropping early.

And its so hot in Queenstown. Wow

Possible in Lesotho. We've been there few years ago in December It was very cold.

John Cole did you feel cool?

Snow Report SA

New to SnowReport? This is one of our early snow-forecast maps from last year. As you can see, they are very popular (this one had a reach of 400 000 and over 80 000 engagements).[see newer updated forecast] Just when we thought winter was over, the weather data is suggesting that the biggest snowfall of the season is on its way this week!

The first snow with this system seems possible during the early hours of Wednesday morning in the Tiffindell and Rhodes area of the Eastern Cape, and by midday on Wednesday, we are expecting to see snow right the way along the Eastern Cape Drakensberg, the Southern Drakensberg and into the central high Drakensberg. During the afternoon on Wednesday, we expect these falls to intensify, and extend further north into the Maluti Mountains around AfriSki and into the eastern parts of Lesotho.

During Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, we expect to see further intensity in the snowfalls as the freezing level drops further, bringing substantial falls over the Eastern Cape Drakensberg, the Southern KZN Drakensberg, as well as the central and northern Drakensberg. During this time, heavy falls are also expected in the central and eastern parts of Lesotho, and there is a chance that some light falls will happen in Matatielle area, and could also come down into the Underberg/Himeville area.

The heaviest snowfalls will be during Thursday morning, according to the weather data, with significant snow possible from the Malutis in the north of Lesotho, right down through the northern Drakensberg, central and southern Drakensberg, the Eastern Cape Drakensberg, as well as central and eastern Lesotho. Snowfalls seem likely to continue right through Thursday afternoon and into early evening in these areas.

By Friday morning, all snowfalls should cease, with clear skies expected.

The weather data is currently showing substantial quantities of snow, with the following accumulation expected: Tiffindell 40-50cm, AfriSki 40-55cm, Sani Pass 60-80cm, Thabana Ntlenyana 120-150cm, Cathedral Peak 40-50cm, Champagne Castle 80-90cm, Giants Castle 90-110cm, Mont-aux-sources 30-40cm and Rhino Peak 70-80cm.

Our map shows light snow heading down into the KZN Midlands around Mooi River and Estcourt but there is a fair amount of inconsistency in this data for low level snow, so we will be updating the forecast every day as we get closer to this event. As this is an advanced forecast, we are likely to see some changes over the next couple of days, but we have seen consistency in this system for the last 48 hours. Please check back daily for updates.
