Hello and lovely to be with you again SnowReporters! We hope you are ready for a exciting new year of snow. 😊❄️
We are currently watching a cold front that is due to sweep past the Western Cape on Thursday morning, moving up the coast though Thursday and Friday, and is possible to bring snow to the Drakensberg on Friday night, and maybe some on Saturday too. Whilst heavy rain is expected at lower altitudes in the Southern and Central Drakensberg, snow is possible on the extreme high peaks like Thabana Ntlenyana (15km inland from Sani Pass), Mafadi, Njesuthi, Popple Peak, Champagne Castle, and Giants Castle.
The higher peaks are currently predicted to get between 10 and 20cm of snow at this stage, whilst the lower peaks could just get a dusting. We are not expecting any low level snow. We also predict a quick melt as ground temperatures remain high ahead of the front. As with any weather system, especially this early in the snow season, we do expect things to change, but we have seen consistency with this system for the last 6 days. We will update again on Friday.
