Snow Report SA

... See MoreSee Less

Our forecast this morning remains the same as yesterday. We are still expecting snow over most of the high peaks in the southern and central Drakensberg (Lesotho side) tomorrow. To mention a few of the peaks, Mafadi, Champagne Castle, Giants Castle, Thabana Ntlenyana and Njesuthi. Anything between 3cm and 7cm can be expected through the day on Saturday on these high peaks. We are not expecting any snow to fall below elevations of 3,200 meters. It is unlikely that the snow will be visible from SA on Saturday, and may be visible on Sunday from vantage points in KZN if the accompanying rain doesn't wash it all away, and the clouds clear. The front is already arriving in KZN, and cold and wet weather is expected from later today. Many coastal areas in the WC and EC started reporting welcome rains from yesterday afternoon as the system has moved up the coast. The weather is clearing behind the system already. ... Is the prediction still the same? Trying to figure out what to wear to Kestel tomorrow. Wind is picking up in Harrismith and has that icy chill.

You forgot to mention Mt. Ingele in Kokstad, buy the look of these light showers it shows that tomorrow we might see some

Any update on Underberg weather?

Cool and raining in Nottingham Road. Thunder grumbling a bit too.

Already much colder and wet in Kokstad. BRRRRRR

Hip hip hooray winter is on it's way

We had moments of sleet last night here in the southern drakensberg. If this is the beginning where are we going to end in August. Going to start planning my sled. I have a few hills I want to take on πŸ˜‚

It's cold and wet in Himeville already.

Looking forward to winter

Any rain for burgersfort in limpopo.

Snow Report SA

It looks like the frontal system has arrived in Cape Town slightly ahead of schedule, bringing some much needed moisture to the area. It is unlikely to drop a huge amount of water, but after the recent heat in the Cape, we are sure that it is much appreciated by the locals. This system is what will bring the snow to the Lesotho mountains on Saturday, so we will be watching closely as it moves up the coast tomorrow into the Eastern Cape and KZN. We have loaded a clear day image of the normal view so that you can compare πŸ™‚ We will update our snow forecast tomorrow morning. ... See MoreSee Less

Snow Report SA

The snow is still coming, but we are seeing a decrease in quantity. The cold air and moisture band, at this stage, will not push quite as far inland as the charts showed yesterday, and as a result there will be less snow. The forecast area remains the same (southern and central Drakensberg on the Lesotho side), but the snow will now more than likely be confined to the extreme high peaks like Mafadi, Njusuthi and Thabana Ntlenyana. The falls are likely to start during the early hours of Saturday morning. Yesterday, we were expecting as much as 10cm on the peaks, and this has been revised to a maximum of 4cm at this stage. The front will be making landfall in the Western Cape later today, and will make it's way up the coast during the day tomorrow. We will update again tomorrow. ... See MoreSee Less

Mafadi & Injisuthi are literally 1km apart, rather pointless mentioning both. Champagne Castle would make more sense to mention

KZN has been terribly hot this whole week so hoping for some cooling down cold frontal weather soon

So what's the prediction for the snow season guys? Will it be a good one?

Love the Snow Report SA, but seriously, can't you wait another 2 months at least?

Thanks for the info.

Rory Graeme Duncan this might affect the Kamberg 😬

always time for snow this time or April, for the first snows on the Drakensberg Mountains brrrrrrr πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Snow Report SA

Could this be our first snow of the season? Yesterday, we reported that snow was coming, and this morning, it is looking like we could get a bit more than what we saw yesterday. We might see snow falls on the eastern Lesotho high peaks from Friday night, but most snow will fall during Saturday and into Saturday night. At this stage, any falls will be confined to the southern and central Drakensberg (on the Lesotho side). Rain is also accompanying this system, so we cannot be sure how much snow will settle, but with up to 10cm expected on the extreme high peaks, like Thabana Ntlenyana, it is possible that we will get visual confirmation. It is extremely unlikely at this stage that any snow will fall in KZN. We will update again tomorrow. The map indicates the area where snow is possible. ... See MoreSee Less

I agree Shaun Tuohy, I'll be over the moon and back if we can get rain in PE and plenty of it in our catchment areas

Snow Report SA

We are starting to see the possibility of some snow falling this weekend, Saturday specifically, over the extreme high peaks of eastern Lesotho. Peaks like Njusuthi, Mafadi and Thabana Ntlenyana could all see some snow from Saturday morning right through until Saturday night. Only a couple of centimeters are expected at this stage, and it is possible that the flurries won't even settle. The snow will also be accompanied by occasional rain. This is quite common during the early season, but if we get sight of anything, we will be sure to let you know. We will also update later in the week as the frontal system moving up the coast gets closer. Colder weather can be expected in the adjacent provinces over the weekend. ... See MoreSee Less

Snow Report SA

We have just been looking at the charts for the next few days, and spotted something that we had to look at again and again .... there is an outside chance that snow will fall tonight in Lesotho around Thabana Ntlenyana (Southern Drakensberg). So, if there is a nip in the air tomorrow, we will all know why. If it happens, and we get confirmation, we will be sure to let you know. ... See MoreSee Less

Comment on Facebook

We have spoken to Sani Mountain Lodge this morning, and there is no snow at the top of the pass, despite it being very cold! But, Thabana Ntlenyana is 600 meters higher than the lodge, so we are not ruling the fall out just yet.

We have no confirmation of snow just yet. Weather at the top is very poor, with lots of rain too. We will update if we get confirmation later this morning.

When we lived in Underberg a farmer who had lived there for many years said there had been snow on the berg every month of the year spread over many years (not all in one year)

With so much rain, does it mean a colder or warmer winter?

Rob. I was wondering. Because Mohale side its very cold

Snow in Feb that's a first

Any news? Did it snow?

We are in NUD and have our wood in the fire! It's chilly tonight!

we having rain...flooding..water rationing...snowfall...draught...extremely strange.

Nice and cold at the bottom of Sani Pass tonight. Hasn't stopped raining all day.

Unusually chilly on the South Coast too. A few days ago we were sweating it out in the normal February humidity😯

tk u. Johannesburg with a bit of rain and cold. Have a nice day.

We need rainfall in CT. Sunrise this morning, tainted by the raging fires all over 😯

Very cold in Queenstown too with mist falling since this afternoon its brrrr.....cold πŸ™‚

We had very fine sleet in Alberton this afternoon 😳

Freezing up here in the Dargle valley..... brrrrrrrrrr!!!

Could do with some of that in CT πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

It's really chilly in Howick!

We are looking for our next location to install a snow camera! We have had much debate, and have decided that Clarens in the Free State will be getting it! We now need our awesome community to help us find a location to install the camera. The ideal position should have a clear view south, towards the Maluti Mountains, and have Wi-Fi available (although not necessary). The position should be reasonably secure to avoid theft (like a guesthouse or hotel). The camera is a standalone unit that is solar charged, and can use 3G if Wi-Fi is not available. Please tag anyone or any establishment in the comments if you think they can assist and meet the criteria. A few interesting stats from last year. The first and last snows are what we call 'measurable snow'. In other words, the snow settled and was able to be measured. The 31 days of snowfalls once again are "measurable falls" and do not include flurries that did not settle. Any predictions about what will happen in 2017? No idea, but I sure wish it will be in Hillcrest, and today!! Need some heat relief!

How many day and what dates in the year before? It would be good to have a comparison.

18/04/2017 Matroosberg

Wish it would snow in the Midlands again soon so we get a cool breeze here in PMB again.

There will be more snow and greater disruptions. The cold fronts are getting stronger.

11/04 /2017..

What a year!

The most interesting falls may have been 30 April 2016, where snow fell as low as 1600 m ASL in the EC, KZN and Lesotho, the late July 2016 snowfalls which may have challenged records, 1 August 2016 snowfall, where unprecedented falls of up to 5cm fell from the Ficksburg & Rosendal vicinity all the way up to Bethlehem & Kestell vicinity with thick snow by Verkykerskop and the 18 September 2016 snowfalls which had unprecedented falls of at least an inch from Van Reenen & Harrismith all the way up to Volksrust with heavy snow in places, causing road closures. Satellite images on the 19 September 2016 (morning) showed that good snow fell on the Balelesberg between Volksrust and Paulpietersburg.

A big thank you to Glyn Rose-Christie for sponsoring this camera as well as Sani Mountain Lodge for hosting us and our equipment. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Mohale Lodge and Katse Lodge for sponsoring the travel expenses.

The snow camera is installed and now we WAIT! You can follow the camera feed on our web page here: http://snowreport.co.za/snow-cameras/
